Viniyoga, T.K.V. Desikachar and Yoga Therapy
Śri T.K.V. Desikachar (1938-2016) was a son of Sri Krishnamacharya. Mr. Desikachar received the teachings of yoga from his father during more than 30 years of one-on-one studies.
Unlike many other styles of yoga that originated from early students of Sri Krishnamacharya (Iyengar yoga of BKS Iyengar, Ashtanga Yoga of Sri Pattabhi Jois, Indra Devi yoga, etc.) who focused on group classes or predetermined sequences, yoga, as was taught by TKV Desikachar is tailored to the individual needs of a specific person. It is taught one-on-one within the healing and therapeutic environment of a teacher-student relationship.
TKV Desikachar called it Viniyoga.
Yoga Sutra Chapter III Sutra 6 states, “tasya bhūmiṣu viniyogaḥ”: Viniyoga is choosing and adapting tools that are compatible with the capacity of the practitioner, and that can help the practitioner to achieve balance.
Today, many students of Mr. Desikachar worldwide continue the tradition of Viniyoga as it was inspired and taught by their beloved teacher.
